Lagos Ranked Second Worst Liveable City In World

As a result of social unrest, terrorism, and war, Lagos city, the commercial hub of Nigeria, has been ranked as the world’s second least livable urban area.

This ranking comes as a direct result of these factors. According to the most recent report from the 2022 Global Liveability Index, Lagos, Nigeria came in at position number 171 out of 172 countries on the list of the most habitable cities throughout the globe for the first quarter of 2022.


Damascus, which is located in Syria, Lagos, which is located in Nigeria, Tripoli, which is located in Libya, Algiers, which is located in Algeria, and Karachi, which is located in Pakistan were given scores of 30.7, 32.2, 34.2, 37.0, and 37.5 correspondingly for their lack of livability.


In addition, the EIU highlighted the top five most livable cities in the world, which are Vienna, Austria (with a score of 99.1), Copenhagen, Denmark (98.0), Zurich, Switzerland (96.3), Calgary, Canada (96.3), and Vancouver, Canada (96.1).


According to the EIU’s disclosure, “however, the majority of the cities in the bottom ten have improved their scores compared with previous year, as COVID-19 pandemic induced pressures.”


The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister organization of The Economist, evaluated 173 cities throughout the world based on a variety of characteristics, such as infrastructure, accessibility to green space, political stability, crime rates, and the quality of health care.


The EIU considers the quality of healthcare, education, infrastructure, political and social stability, and cultural offerings when ranking the various cities according to their living conditions.


Its overall score was 32.2 out of a possible 100, with Lagos receiving scores of 20.0, 20.8, 44.9, 25.0, and 46.4 from the ranking index’s parameters for stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education, and infrastructure, respectively. This brought the city’s total score down from 100 to 32.2.
